According to Business Innovation Observatory Trend Report produced by European Commission, over the last years, final users are getting more and more involved in the process of design ideation and creation on the product, as well as on the urban and housing level. This has parallely brought to the development and introduction of innovation elements into business models of companies in the sector and particular awareness towards ecological and green topics. According to the Report, companies operating in the construction sector plan to produce green 60% of their total production; the so-called “intelligent houses” refer to deals amounting to 1 bln, including all the devices potentially connected to residences.

As per the Report, one of the most impactful innovative trends in the design sector in the last years is coming from crowdsourcing. The companies successfully riding this trend are numerous, among them the Report also states CoContest, the startup of LVenture Group portfolio. Crowdsourcing “sees the market as a melting pot for discussion between firms and active customers willing to share, combine and renew each other’s resources and capabilities in order to create reciprocal added value.” (Business Innovation Observatory Trend Report, p. 4)

The process of design co-creation differs from one company to another. On the one hand, there are companies that use crowdsourcing as a marketing tool. On the other hand, there are companies as CoContest that act as facilitators of crowdsourcing design process.

“CoContest applies Crowdsourcing to interior design: shaping public tenders’ logics to interior design needs of homeowners, real estate agencies and contracting companies. CoContest revolutionises the world of architecture and interior design. CoContest changes today’s conventional rules and disrupts the status quo that holds back the new generation of talented and passionate designers.” (Business Innovation Observatory Trend Report, p. 7)
